Richard Lee Wert, Grand Forks, N.D.
Richard "Dick" Wert, 78, Grand Forks, ND, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2003, at home with his family.
Richard Lee Wert was born Nov. 30, 1924 to Emil and Lucille (Siguaw) Wert in Jamestown, ND. As a very young child his family moved to Lakota, ND, where he was raised and educated. He graduated from Lakota High School, where he was a member of the 1943 State Championship Basketball Team. He began working for the Great Northern Railroad in March 1944. He married Mildred Bedker of Edgeley, ND, on Dec. 30, 1947, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fargo. In 1948, they moved to Grand Forks and became members of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Dick continued working for Burlington Northern Railroad and was promoted to Conductor. He later worked as a Conductor on Amtrak until he retired Dec. 10, 1985.
They continued living in Grand Forks spending winters in Arizona and summers at Long Lake Campsite by Detroit Lakes, MN. Dick was an avid hunter of both large and small game. He had many memorable trips over the years as he shared his love of hunting with his son Todd and later with his grandsons. During the summers, Dick spent many hours on the lake with his grandchildren, taking them fishing, water skiing and boat rides. Dick was deeply devoted to his wife and family. He will be greatly missed, but we have many wonderful memories to hold in our hearts.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mildred; daughters, Marsha (Jerry) Nelson of Grand Forks; Kathy (Gary) Schultz, St. Louis, MO; Son, Todd (Beth) Wert of Mesa, AZ; Seven grandchildren: Chad & Todd Bushy; Stephanie, Lindsay & Kevin Schultz; and Jessica & Christopher Wert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters; Ivadell, Pauline and Gloria.
