WHITING MOTHER OF SCHOOL CHIEF AND BANKER DIES
Mrs. Kovacik Succumbs at 70; Service Set for Saturday Morning
Mrs. Theresa Kovacik, 70, two of whose sons are bank and school officials in Whiting, died in her home at 1731 Center street yesterday afternoon after a long illness. She was a Whiting resident for 40 years.

One of her four sons, Stephen Kovacik, is vice president and cashier of the American Trust and Savings banks. Another son, Andrew Kovacik, is treasurer of the Whiting school board.

Other survivors are her husband, John; sons, John, Jr., and Joseph; four daughters, Mrs. Anna Hajduch, Mrs. Theresa Grenchik, Mrs. Irene Vrabley and Miss Mary Kovacik; two brothers, Frank and Martin Dado, all Whiting residents, and two sisters, Mrs. Sophie Zrenchik of Whiting and Mrs. Susan Tryol, Europe.

Mrs. Kovacik was an active member of the Immaculate Conception church, having belonged to the church’s Rosary and Altar societies. She also held membership in the Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Ladie’s union.

Funeral services are scheduled of 9 a. m. Saturday at the Kovacik residence and at 9:30 at the Immaculate Conception church with Rev. Lach officiating. Six grandchildren of the deceased will serve as pallbearers. Interment will be at Calumet Park cemetery, Crown Point.

One son, Joseph Kovacik, was scheduled to leave for Indianapolis today for induction into the army but was allowed a postponement because of his mother’s death by Lake county selective service board No. 2.

John KOVACIK Dies; Pioneer Of Whiting

John KOVACIK Sr., 87, a pioneer resident of Whiting, died Friday afternoon in his home at 1731 Center St., Whiting, where he had resided for 60 years. He had been ill since October.

Mr. KOVACIK was among the oldest retirees of the Standard Oil Refinery in Whiting, having retired on pension in 1920.

He and his wife, who died in 1942, came to Whiting in 1897. He was born in the province of Slovakia, in what then was the Austro-Hungarian empire and came to America as a young man with his wife. They settled briefly in Joliet, then went to Whiting.

Mr. KOVACIK was active in the Holy Name Society of Immaculate Conception Church, the Rosary Society and the First Catholic Slovak Men’s Union. He had a life long interest in American history and political affairs.

Services will be held Tuesday from the Baran Chapel in Whiting and in the Immaculate Conception Church.

A grandson, Rev. John L. LACH, the pastor, will deliver a sermon in Slovak, and Father Hajduch will give a sermon in English.

Internment will be in the Calumet Park Cemetery, Crown Point.

Jim Grenchik was born on August 2, 1955 and was a lifelong resident of Whiting. A member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, class of 1973 and he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the Calumet College of St. Joseph. Mary B. Kovacik, nee Zyara, age 93, of Munster passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at her residence. She was the beloved wife of the late Stephan J. Kovacik who passed away November 24, 1982. She is survived by seven devoted grandchildren, Carl (Sharon) Paunicka of Munster, Dr. Mark (Ruth) Paunicka of Champaign, IL, Becca Kovacik and Robert Kovacik both of Los Angeles, CA, David (Magaly) Kovacik of New Jersey, Lisa (David) Jesse of Florida, and Stephen Kovacik, Jr. of Ohio; eight cherished great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Christina, Matthew, Andrea, and David Paunicka, Thomas Kovacik, and Elizabeth and Walker Jesse; devoted caregiver, Maria Protz. She was also preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Louis Paunicka; son, Stephen J. Kovacik; sister, Ann Rybnick; and brother, Charles Zyara.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 31, at 11 AM at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235 - 119th Street, Whiting. Mary Kovacik was born on December 8, 1907 in Stanford, Connecticut to John and Ann (Chernick) Zyara and was a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region; a member of St. Thomas More Church, Munster. She had great pride in her Slovak heritage and promoted Slovak culture by being a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association Br. 452, serving as its secretary for 70 years. She was also secretary of the Helen Kocan District and a member of the Slovak Catholic Sokol Wreath 81. The St. Ann's Sodality of the Immaculate Conception Church will offer prayers Friday at 7:15 PM. 219-659-4400.

Raymond S. Hajduch, 58, formerly of the Calumet area, passed away May 4, 2001 in Longwood, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Georgia; two sons, George Andrew "Drew" Hajduch of Schererville, IN and Raymond Hajduch (Tammie) Hajduch of Clearwater, FL; one grandaughter, Kelsey; sister, Helen (Michael) Svonavec of Hammond; brother-in-law, Dr. J. Vega of Chicago; many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on May 26, 2001 in Fern Park, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to charity of donor's choice.

Mr. Hajduch was employed with Home Depot in Florida, and formerly employed with Ace Hardware and Jansen's Fruit Market in Highland, IN.

My grandfather Andrew Hajduch was born in Chlebnice around 1895. He married in the United States. He came to the US around 1914. Can anyone help me find any relatives in the area? My great grandparents were Andrew Hajduch and Christina Maslokova from Chlebnice. They never came to the United States. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Andrew S. Kovacik was born on October 28, 1916. His father, John Kovacik, Sr. and his mother Theresa (Dado) were born in Czechoslovakia. Andrew began his education in the Whiting public schools. He graduated from Northwestern University, where he attended night sessions, with a bachelor's degree in 1941. While in college he began a two-way career: he went into the business world as an employee at Standard Oil and he began service as a member of the Board of Education. Kovacik was a master of seven languages, and in 1942, he joined the United States Army where he served as a member of the Counter-Intelligence Corps. Five years later, Andrew Kovacik was elected mayor of Whiting on the Democratic ticket. During his term as mayor, Kovacik established seven playgrounds, built a municipal softball field, appointed a full time public nurse, renovated the entire sewage disposal system, and fought for and won a better lighting program for the city. Mayor Koacik married Victoria Fliesher on June 10, 1948. As mayor, Kovacik was an advocate for character-building and delinquency-prevention programs.
