6. IF YOU MAKE YOUR TRAIN

By Larry Tagg

I have an infatuation with trains and boats. As modes of transportation, they're slow and outdated, which appeals to me. With them, there is an elongated moment where the departing person may exchange a last look with the person who remains behind.

I see the person in the song as a strong person, not a victim. He or she is looking the situation directly in the eye, confident of prevailing. What's questionable is whether the train-bound partner is worthy of such a person.

If you make your train
You'll be home by dawn
You'll wake up in your own bed
And you'll put your busy life back on
If you make your train
Nobody gets wise
They all get to own you
And think that they're prettiest in your eyes
	If you make your train
	You'll still have me
I always remember love is never a perfect thing
	If you make your train
If you feel like I do
I can stand a little pain
I can stand a little rain
	If you make your train
If you leave right now
You'll be just in time
You'll spare yourself the hard part
Where you cheer me up with all your pretty goodbyes
Here's your coat, here's your hat
And here's your freedom
You'll need them all, I don't mind
Just be loving and kind
	If you make your train
	You'll still have me
I always remember love is never a perfect thing
	If you make your train
If you feel like I do
	I can improvise
'Cause I know you'll realize you start pretending
When you reach that other station
Here with me at this end of the line
		I'm your final destination . . .
