My Great-great grandfather

Olaf Anderson (AKA Anders Olson) was a shoe maker & worked at the same time as a farmer, living on a small farm originally called Fossen. A railway depot is now situated where the farm once stood. The rail station is called Farsjø after the six farms in the settlement.

Originally named Ole Andersen, he changed his name to Oscar Anderson in Australia.

After Ole was confirmed, he went to sea at about the age of 15. He was on the 2 masted schooner "Omerpaska" (1879-1881) until shipwrecked in the North Sea. He then served on the 3 master barque "Expedit" (1822-?). Altogether he was shipwrecked 3 times. Later while he was working with the coast guard, he was attacked by a Portuguese/American with a knife, being stabbed in the neck & blinded in his left eye. He traveled with the Merchant Navy to Queensland where he worked as a diver on the Clarence River laying piles for the Clarence River Sugar Company. Whilst in Qld he owned & raced horses. He again joined the Merchant Navy around 1905 & worked on coastal freighters from Melbourne until about 1916. On the 3rd of April 1906 he became a naturalized Australian & his name was changed to Oscar Anderson. He married "Helda" on September 12th 1907. From about 1917-1942 he worked as a stevedore at Port Melbourne & Victoria Docks. On one occasion after a winch tore 2 fingers from his hand, he walked to hospital to have the wound stitched, then walked home again arriving at 3 A.M. He retired from work at the age of 78 & received the pension until his death in 1948 aged 84.

According to her granddaughter (in an email dated 25 January 2015), Anne Olette arrived in Minnesota and changed her name to Lottie Anderson. She married Ernest Ruben Howell on 2 November 1902 in Rochester, MN. She died April 3, 1936 and is buried in Jamestown, ND.

Warren D. Howell

Warren D. Howell-----61, Minot, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 24, 2015 in a Minot hospital.

Warren David Howell was born on September 6, 1954, a son of Wallace D. and Karen (Monson) Howell in Minot, ND. He was raised and educated in Minot, where he graduated from Minot High School in 1972.

On September 14, 1972, Warren enlisted into the United States Army. He proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on September 16, 1975.

Following his discharge he returned to Minot, where he began his career with the railroad, starting at Amtrak. On August 1, 1998, Warren was united in marriage to Rebecca Richardson. They made their home in Minot where Warren continued to work for the railroad until retiring on October 7, 2015 as a conductor for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

He enjoyed riding motorcycles, scuba diving, sailing, working with computers, hunting and fishing. He was a charter member of The Association of Harley Davidson Motorcycle Riders. He loved being around children, especially his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Warren enjoyed life to the fullest. He touched so many peoples live in so many different ways. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Warren is survived by: Wife Rebecca, Minot; one brother: Douglas Howell, Austin, TX; three sisters: Beth Anderson, Doylestown, OH, Heidi H. (Bruce) Clark, Minot, Marianne Kelly, Newark, OH; step-son: Jason M. Richardson and his three children: Christian M., Brekka L., and Jordan D. Holten; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace “Wally” D. Howell and Karen “Jill” L. Wilk, step-father Theodore Wilk, paternal grandparents: Nels and Edna Ringsaker, maternal grandparents Henry W. “Hank” and Edith K. Monson; aunt Carol J. Johnson, uncles: Everett Shirley, Keith D. Monson, brother John H. Wilk, and a nephew Andrew D. Jones.

Visitation: There will be no reviewal, however, people may sign a guest register on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 from 3-7 at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Memorial Service: Thursday, October 29, 2015 at 10:30 am at Zion Lutheran Church, Mino t

Walter Jadie Howell

Walter Jadie Howell, 74, Plaza, died Sunday, May 5, 2013 in a Minot nursing home. Walter was born October 1, 1938 in Stanley, the son of Jadie and Bernice (Iverson) Howell. He was raised at Stanley, attended country school and graduated from Stanley High School in 1956. He then worked in the oilfields at Tioga before starting his career in the Elevator business. On July 24, 1960 Walter was united in marriage to Sandra Olson at the Baptist Church in Stanley. Throughout his life, he worked at grain elevators at Stanley, Dickey, Carpio and Plaza. He also assisted local farmers in the evenings and on weekends during spring planting and harvest. He retired after 50 years in the business. Following retirement Walt worked as a flow tester for Lynne pumping for three years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling and snowmobiling. He cherished spending time with his family, watching his grandchildren's activities and hosting gatherings with his family and friends at his cabin at Van Hook. Family: Walter is survived by: his wife, Sandy of Plaza; children, Scott Howell (Bernadean) of Makoti and Karla Lobsinger (John) of Bismarck; grandchildren, Tanner and Tyson Lynne, Trina and Trisha Howell, and Maddy and Jaden Lobsinger; brother, Denver Howell (Marge) of Billings, Mont.; brother-in-law, Rand Olson (Diane) of Stanley and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Robyn Lynne. Funeral: Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 10:00am in First Lutheran Church, Plaza. Interment: East Plaza Cemetery

Nils Anderson

Thomas Anderson's brother who remained in Norway. Also spelled Nels.

Nels studied as a machinist and became a Chief Engineer for the same Norwegian shipping company for 42 years. He passed away accidentally while in port in France approximately 1936. His several daughters all married except the eldest, Hjordis [Actually, Anna], who helped her mother on the farm in Kragero Banen. Nels was the Chief Engineer on the S.S Victoria and then the "Romulus" for many years after supervising the installation of its engine room & until his death.
