Tony C. Dado, Sr. Wisconsin / Whiting, IN
Tony C. Dado, Sr, 77, died unexpectedly of a brain hemorrhage in Green Bay, Wisconsin on August 21, 1999. Tony was born in Whiting at 1429 Fischrupp Ave., where he lived with his parents, Francis and Katherine (Duray) Dado and four brothers: Frank, John, Steve and Bill. He graduated from Whitint High School in 1940. Joining the Army during WWII, he received the Bronze Star as a volunteer for Merrill's Marauders Special Forces in Burma. But at heart he was a pacifist and intensely spiritual. After the war, he sought religious life as a priest or brother. He tried life with four religious orders: the Passionists (St. Paul, Kansas); the Capuchins (Detroit) where he knew Fr. Solanus Casey; the Trappists (Gethsemani, Kentucky) and the Salvatorians (St. Nazianz, Wisconsin). He was also recruited as a first member of the Servants of the Paraclete by their founder Fr. Gerald Fitzgerald. Eventually however, he went to St. Peter's in downtown Chicago where he joined the Third Order Franciscans, who are allowed to marry. There he met Rosemarie Michels of Chicago. She shared his spiritual ideas and interests. They were married in 1948 and had three sons: Michael, Anthony Jr. and Joseph. Tony had a love of fresh air, the outdoors, and country living. His dream to "live off the land" by growing vegetables, became a reality in 1956 when he bought a farm and moved to a rural area near Green Bay, Wisconsin. There with 20 acres of vegetables and 400 chickens he and his family made a living by selling produce and eggs to grocery stores. He was a self-taught contractor who built a new home for his family while increasing his assets by selling the old one. He did this repeatedly throughout the years, building a total of 5 homes besides a greenhouse which he used for growing tomatoes during the winter. During periods when the produce was not producing income he held many other jobs including letter carrier and clerk for the post office. He had a devotion to the Eucharist. In spite of his busy schedule, he often found time to attend Mass on weekdays besides Sundays. He loved spiritual reading. In the evenings he would read aloud to his family from spiritual books. Recently he built shelves in the living room to hold his large collection of religious books. He also put his faith into practice by giving produce to the poor. He always contributed generously to the church and to emergency collections for those in need. Those who have gone before him to meet the Lord include: his parents, his wife's parents, Henry and Matilda (Karls) Michels, his brothers, a sister-in-law, Alice, a daughter-in-law, Lisa; and her father.
He is survived by his wife; by six sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law: Sylvia Dado (Whiting), Mary Dado (Chicago), Mary Dado (Crown Point, Sr. Matthias Michels (Sinsinawa, Wisconsin), Anne Michels (Green Bay), John and Marian (Michels) Donovan (Chicago; by his sons, Michael (Green Bay), Anthony (Green Bay) and Joseph (Boston); by many nieces, nephews and their spouses; by his oldest son's children, Michael Jr., Mary and Raphael, and their grandmother, Shirley Shore; and by many other relatives and friends.
Tony frequently prayed the Rosary and had a devotion to Mary. He was attending a talk about her by one of the visionaries of Medjugorje when he had his stroke. A priest there gave him the Sacrament of Anointing, as he began his journey to Heaven. A Mass of Resurrection was con-celebrated for him in Green Bay, by three priests, on August 24th, the Feast of St. Owen, who is also known as St. Dado (See "Lives of the Saints"). Sympathy can be sent to Mrs. Anthony Dado and Family, 1545 Seventh St., Green Bay, WI 54304.
