Salem man found slain
SALEM - A 57-year-old Salem man was found slain in his apartment Saturday morning, police said.
Richard L. Huffines, of 907 E. Hackberry St. in Salem, was discovered in his bedroom about 9 a.m. when a family member and a Salem police officer went to the apartment to check on him, said Sgt. Marvin Jenkins of the Indiana State Police, Sellersburg post.
Jenkins would not say how Huffines died pending an autopsy today.
Police went to Huffines apartment after Washington County and Scott County deputies discovered Huffines' burned-up 1980 Pontiac early Saturday morning on Ind. 56 about three miles from Scottsburg, Jenkins said.
Jenkins said police had interviewed several people in connection with the slaying but there were no suspects late Saturday.
"There are some very active leads being followed up on, the case is very ongoing," he said. He declined to give a motive in the slaying.
Huffines lived by himself in the apartment, one of four in a converted house on Hackberry Street, Jenkins said.
