“Stephen Riester came to the United States from Germany about the year 1843 and settled in Dubois County, this state, where he married, afterwards going to Louisville, Kentucky, where he remained a year, at the end of which time he returned to Dubois County, where he remained until 1887, in which year he came to this county, and here he spent the rest of his life, his death occurring in 1901. He was a shoemaker by trade but followed farming in Dubois County and met with considerable success in agricultural pursuits. He was a staunch supporter of the Democratic party and a member of the Catholic church. He and his wife, the latter died in 1899, were the parents of the following children: Phillip, Preston (deceased), Stephen (deceased), Henry (deceased), Peter, Andrew, Thomas (deceased), John (deceased), George, William, Barbara (deceased), and Jacob (deceased).”152

Preston (1849-1878) had 3 children. Stephen (1850-1911) had 8 children. Henry (1853-1954 [sic]) Peter (1855-1936) married Fannie R. Boyles and had 14 children. They were Ada (Mrs. Seth Yarborough), Clarence, Stella (Mrs. James A. Strange), Oliver, Curtis, Evalena (Mrs. James Simpson), Inez (Mrs. Robert Boyd), Harry, Serge, Seth, Gilbert, Wilbur (married Ruth McCord and has 4 children, Ann (Mrs. Larry Newton), Peter, Jane (Mrs. Kenneth W. Fields), Marilyn (Mrs. Mark Eddy)), One infant died and was not named, Earl, Andrew (1858- ) had five children, Thomas (1860 - ) ,John (1862-1889) married Mary A. Graves and had 3 children. He was killed in a coal mine accident being hit with a piece of falling slate. His children were John (1884-1943), Edward (1886-1947), Caroline (1887-1941). She married C. He was born in 1862, and died 16 Feb. 1889 as recorded in in Index of Deaths, Daviess Co., Washington, IN, Ch. 6, p. 10. He was killed in a coal mine accident after being hit with a piece of falling slate. She married second John W. Taylor on 25 Aug. 1892, as recorded in in Index of Marriages, Daviess Co., IN, bk. 7, p. 442. He was born in March 1859 in IN. According to the Daviess Co. History, only three children (John, Edward and Caroline) are mentioned as Reister children. In the 1900 census, Daviess Co., Washington, IN, (ED 18 p. 12B), John W. Taylor, rail road laborer, and Mary are listed along with two children: Fred M. and Marie. Mary A. Taylor was the head of the household in 1910 living in Washington, IN, ED 18, sheet 1A. She was the mother of 9 children with 5 living. Unmarried sons John and Edward Reister, and Taylor childrenFred and Marie lived with her, and daughter Caroline and son-in-law Arthur McCord lived in the next household. (R‑1)
