William H. Bennett

Cece's Great-Grandfather Born sometime between 1852-1858 (based on Marriage of Harrison and Catherine and Death of Harrison)

Best guess is late 1853 - early 1854

Death after 1925 and likely before 1941, based on obituaries for Samuel B. Wellman and Sarah McMickle, his half-siblings. Possibly in Maryland.

Where were they in 1900?

Suppositions are my own.

  • William unaccounted for, but may have still been alive, according to obituaries later of his Wellman half-siblings.
  • Elizabeth in Paoli, was listed as Widowed, with Samuel J. still living with her. Was she truly widowed, or abandoned?
  • Mary, in Orleans was married to William H. Owens, and had two children.
  • Samuel, in Paoli was 23 and still living with Elizabeth. This would be before Samuel and Hattie got married in August, 1900.
  • Daniel/Berrian Scott unaccounted for. If birth year is accurate, he would be about 22.
  • Minnie (age about 20) unaccounted for, but an 18 year old William A. Allen was still living at home in Orleans. Their marriage record for September, 1900 indicated his age as 21. Is it possible that she was living elsewhere, perhaps employed in a nearby county?
  • Wily/Wiley unaccounted for. He would have been 17 at the time of the census. Had he already gone to England?

Chuck Elledge notes in http://elledge.familytreeguide.com/getperson.php?personID=I2275&tree=T1

Indiana, Crawford Co 1860 Federal Census, US Census Bureau, (microfilm series M653)
"Sterling Twp., Crawford Co., IN
House 611 Family 618
Clark Wellman 28 yrs. Farmer $150 b. IN 1 in school
Catherine 24yrs. b. IN
Wm. 6 b. IN
Elizabeth 3 yrs. b. IN
Joseph 2/12 yrs. b. IN"

This would place William's birth abt. 1853-1854, Elizabeth's abt. 1856-1857, Joseph would be Joseph Wellman, born in 1860, possibly April or May.

Viewing the same data by searching Ancestry.com 1860 Census information http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1860usfedcenancestry&rank=1&new=1&so=3&MSAV=0&msT=1&gss=ms_db&gsfn=clark&gsln=wellman&uidh=u42

Clark was listed as age 23. The remaining information otherwise matches. I have not viewed the original documents, only a summary.

Berrian Scott Bennett

B. 1877 Shows up in 1880 Census for Knox County, Kentucky

1880 Census info

Sidetrack:

There is a Barren Daniel Allen AKA Baron DeKalb "Dandy" Allen who married Eliza Jane Hammons, Elizabeth Hammond Bennett's sister. Is there a connection? They also had a son named Wiley. Did Elizabeth and William name a son or sons in his honor? What is the connection with "Scott?" To me, this image from the 1880 Census looks like what has been transcribed as "Scott" could also be interpreted as "Dcalb".

Image

Baron DeKalb is a historical figure.

There is also a DeKalb county in Indiana

Given that Samuel Jones Tilden Bennett may also have been named after an historical (or actually contemporary) figure, it makes some sense.

Daniel Bennett

  • b. 1877

Is it possible that "Daniel" and "Berrian Scott" Bennett are the same person? Cannot find either name in Draft Card Registration of 1917-1918. Was he deceased? Or not in the country anymore?

  • Minnie Bennett Allen

    AKA Mindie Bennett?

Sources indicate that William and Elizabeth Bennett's daughter was named Mindie, married to Art Allen, but I've only been able to find a "Minnie" married to a "William A. Allen." Her parent are listed as Wm and mother's maiden name Hammond, so it seems likely it's the same person. I've take the leap of faith that William A. Allen's name is "William Arthur Allen" though I have no evidence yet to support this. The following linkages are based on that (possibly erroneous) assumption. I currently have found no evidence of a relationship to the children names I've been given either.
