Catherine "Kitty" Grimes Bennett Wellman

Summary

Cece's great-great-grandmother, AKA Katherine/Catherine/Catharine "Kitty" Grimes Bennett Wellman. She was born August 15, 1835 and died June 13, 1910. Her grave is in the Providence Cemetery, Greenfield Township, of Orange County, Indiana. She married Harrison Bennett 1852, and with him had two children, William H. and Elizabeth. There is a possibility that one more child was born, but died.

Harrison died in 1858, and she subsequently married John Clark Wellman, who was Harrison's first cousin though his mother's line. Catherine and Clark had four more children, Joseph (possibly known as "Dutch",) Samuel, Sarah and John Robert. William and Elizabeth were raised by Clark and her, and briefly used the Wellman name. After Clark's death in 1876, she bore one more child, James Downey Wellman, purportedly named for his unnamed father (James Downey?)

The most significant research information was supplied by Nancy Horstmann, Clark's great-granddaughter.

John Clark Wellman

John Clark Wellman (apparently know as Clark) was Catherine Grimes 2nd husband, after the death of Harrison Bennett. It appears that Clark Wellman and Harrison Bennett were first cousins. If this is true, then my wife is not only blood related to Catherine & Harrison, but Clark as well.

Clark's Father and Mother were Joseph Wellman and Sarah Pittman.

Harrison's Father and Mother were William M. Bennett and Rebecca Pittman.

Rebecca and Sarah Pittman were sisters, daughters of James Pittman and Rachel McGrew

To complicate things further, Ruth McGrew, Rachel McGrew's sister, was also William M. Bennett's first wife. After her death, William married her niece, Rebecca.

Inez Morine

Inez G. Morine, 91, died Saturday (Feb. 7, 1998) at ManorCare Health Services, Kankakee.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. John Marvin will officiate.
Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens, Kankakee.
Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, where she was a member.
She was born March 11, 1906, in Frenchlick, Ind., the daughter of James and Helen Bennett Wellman.
Her husband, Harold Morine, is deceased.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Kenneth Pederson of Montana; one brother, Wayne Wellman of California; and four grandchildren.
Deceased is one son, Harold Morine.
Mrs. Morine had worked at Bon Marche and The Fair Store.

Anna Wellman, 80, entered into rest Tuesday, March 16, 2004. She was born August 20, 1923 in Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Hazel Carlson and her husband of 50 years, Wayne Wellman. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Anne Brink. Further survived by her three grandchildren, Edward Brink, James Brink and Michelle Brink. Also survived by her two great grandchildren, Taylor Brink and Drew Haskell. Graveside services will be held Friday, March 19, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at Cherokee Memorial Park, Hwy. 99 and E. Harney Lane, Lodi. DeYoung Shoreline Chapel, 7676 Shoreline Dr., Stockton, in care of arrangements.

WELLMAN, SAMUEL - -1861 - -1925 WELLMAN, Samuel, Springs Valley Herald (February 12, 1925) Obituary
Samuel Wellman, the son of Clark and Katherine Wellman, was born in Crawford County, November 17th, 1861 and fell asleep February 1st, 1925 at the age of 63 years, 2 months and 14 days. His boyhood days were spent among the hills of Crawford and Orange Counties where he formed friendships that have continually grown warmer amongst the friends of his boyhood days. In his young manhood he joined the Providence Baptist Church where he retained his membership until death. On the 2nd of October 1886 he was united in marriage to Nancy Deal and their home has always been in the neighborhood in which they were raised. To this union ten children were born; one son, Ellis, who died in infancy, preceding his father to the Home Over There. At the Wellman home there was always such a warm welcomed sincere feeling of good cheer that the old homestead was the scene of many happy gathering of the young people of the country side and of all the neighbors of the community. This spirit of friendliness and good cheer has radiated into the hearts and lives of many of the community and memories of these happy occasions will always be cherished by those who enjoyed the privilege of being there.

Last October he began to fail in health and gradually became worse, his condition necessitating an operation on the 17th of January. He withstood the operation in a way pleasing to those who were caring for him and he had left the hospital and was on his way home, stopping for a few days at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Stella Hill at Paoli, where his condition became worse, he growing weaker and weaker, continuing so until his death. Realizing that the end was near he called his companion and each of his children to his bed giving them fatherly counsel and advice encouraging them to do that which was noble and kind and good. He told his loved ones just when he would leave - and according to his predictions, the Lord called him Home on the Sabbath Day to be with him.

He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife and five sons, Homer, Lawrence, Worth, Zenor, and Kenneth all of Orange County; four daughters, Mrs. Stella Hill of Paoli, Ind., Mrs. Rella Brown of near Fargo, Ind., Mrs. Cora Kriechgauer of Canton, Ill., and Irene who still remains at home; his three sons-in-law. Mr. Grover Hill, Mr. Louis Brown and Mr. Frank Kriechgauer who were loved and treated as his own children; the four grandchildren, Trula, Lula Mae and Pauline Hill and Eugene Herbert Kriechgauer who will miss their grandpa and the happy times they enjoyed with him; one sister, Mrs. Sarah McMickle of French Lick, one brother, John Wellman of near Temple, Ind., one half-sister, Mrs. John Stadeford of English, Ind., two half-brothers James Wellman of Kankakee, Ill. and William Bennett of maryland and a host of relatives and friends for to know him was to remember him and love him.

James D. Wellman James D. Wellman, 65, of Bloomington, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011. Born, July 18, 1945 in Bloomington, he was the son of Worth Wellman and Lenore (White) Wellman Perry. Jim was a fireman for 37 years at the Perry-Clear Creek Fire Department where he served two terms as Fire Chief. On June 27, 2009 he received the following awards, the State Fire Marshall’s Meritorious Service Award, the Governor’s Meritorious Service Award, and the Distinguished Hoosier Award. He enjoyed Thursday night dinners with his wife, brothers and sister-in-laws, he and his brothers have kept the tradition going after the death of his parents. He also had a great time at golf outings with his brothers. A loving husband, father and papaw he enjoyed NASCAR, woodworking, hunting and fishing. But, spending time with his family was most important to him. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Theresa (Cook) Wellman, one son, Bradley Wellman (Elese), one daughter, Cindi Bowlen (Greg) all of Bloomington, two grandsons, Ty and Kyle Dugan, two brothers, Charles Wellman (Carolyn) of Bedford, Sam Wellman (Janice) of Bloomington, nieces and nephews, Dane Wellman, Deb Wellman, Brett Wellman, Janna Shields, Betty Anderson, great nieces and nephews, Grant Wellman, Clark Wellman, Autumn Wellman, Kayla Wellman, Adam Wellman, Patty Wellman, Devyn Anderson, Dylan Anderson, Olivia Shields, Addyson Shields, Zachary Wellman and Ashley Hepp, several great-great nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, Millard Perry, nephews, Brian Wellman, Stephen Michael Wellman, and a sister-in-law, Virginia Wellman. Services will be 10:30am Saturday, January 22, 2011 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington, with Jim Cain officiating. Visitation will be 3-8pm Friday and 9:30-10:30am Saturday at The Funeral Chapel. Entombment will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens. She died at ? am Tuesday Nov 25 2003 in OSF SL Francis Medical Center. Born Jan 20, 1914 in Logansport she was the daughter of John and Elena Casalini Rossi. On Jan 12, 1945 in San Francisco, Calif., she was married to Kenneth Wellman who preceded in death on April in Peoria. Mrs. Wellman was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Surviving are one daughter Nancy Horstmann and her husband Thomas, Peoria Heights, one son, Michael Wellman and his wife Bonnie, Mission Vejo, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one sister, Erma Kuszmaul and her husband, Kenneth, Deer Creek. One grandson, Scott, preceded in death in 1994 and two sisters and three brothers also preceded in death. Franciscan Friars will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 8 Friday in Wright Salmon Mortuary where a Scripture service will be held at and 30 minutes before the services Saturday in the church. WELLMAN, JOHN ROBERT-----FARGO----John Robert Wellman, son of Catherine Grimes and Clark Wellman, was born August 14, 1869 and died August 10, 1949, at the age of 79 years. In 1910, he married Martha Roll and to this union five children were born. Those who preceded him in death were two brothers, Dutch and Samuel Wellman, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah McMickle and Mrs. Elizabeth Standiford. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Lula Haycox, of Milltown; Mrs. Gladys Longest, of Louisville, and Mrs. Jewell Eastridge, of English; two sons, Russell Wellman, of English and Cpl. Lovell Wellman, U.S. Army, Ft. Eustis, Va.; a brother, James Wellman, of Bloomington and ten grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Providence Church Friday, with Leonard Cummins, of English, in charge. Burial was in the church cemetery. From Linda Lockhart.

Mrs. Sarah McMickle, 73, passed away at her home on Walnut Street Thursday night, February 6th, after a long illness of nephritis and heart trouble. Mrs. McMickle was born near English, Ind., but spent the last forty years in French Lick where she has many friends. Funeral services were held at Providence Sunday afternoon by Rev. Wm. Hancock with interment in the nearby cemetery. W. V. Ritter & Son were in charge of arrangements. She is survived by three sons, Guy of French Lick, John of Charlestown, Ind. and Zenor of Chicago, Ill., two brothers, John Wellman of Marengo and James Wellman of Kankakee, Ill.

Sarah Wellman McMickle, the daughter of Clark and Catherine Wellman, was born in Orange County, near English, Indiana, August 25, 1867. She spent 45 years of her life in French Lick, Indiana, where she passed away at the home of her son, Guy McMickle, February 6, 1941. Thus closing a very useful life of 73 years, 6 months and 19 days. In 1886 she was married to Sidney B. McMickle. To this union 3 sons were born, namely: John and Guy, French Lick, Indiana and Zenor, Chicago, Illinois. To these sons she manifested a true mother's love and their welfare was her chief concern and she will be sadly missed by them all. Besides the sons she was blessed with 3 daughter-in-laws, two of whom are living, namely: Mrs. Maude McMickle, French Lick and Leota McMickle, Chicago, Illinois. Mrs. John McMickle preceded her in death. The kindness and love of the daughters-in-law was much appreciated by her. For the last 22 years she made her home with her son, Guy, where she passed away at the time mentioned above.

She united with Providence Primitive Baptist Church in her youth and lived and died in that faith. She always appreciated the opportunity of returning to the old church, and when there enjoyed the services very much. She was a loving and true companion, and a devoted and precious mother, grandmother, great grandmother, a loving sister, a good neighbor, an honorable citizen. She leaves besides the dear ones mentioned above to mourn her departure, two brothers, John, commonly known as Bee, Marengo, Indiana, James, Kankakee, Illinois; one half sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Standeford, English, Indiana; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

Sidney McMickle, 63 years of age, was found dead in his room in a hotel in Saint Louis, last Friday morning. The cause of death was given as asphyxiation. Mr. McMickle was well know locally and the body was brought here by undertakers W. V. Ritter & Son, Sunday morning. Burial services were conducted Sunday afternoon at Providence cemetery near Fargo, Indiana. Besides the widow, Mrs. Sarah McMickle of French Lick, three sons survive the father's death. Guy of French Lick, Zenor of Chicago, Illinois and John of Lebanon, Missouri. Rev. William Hancock conducted the funeral services.

Sidney B. McMickle, son of John and Elizabeth Allen McMickle was born near English, Crawford County, Indiana on June 18, 1866 and departed this life in St. Louis, Missouri on Friday, August 9, 1929. Age 63 years, 1 month and 21 days. He was united in marriage to Sarah Wellman January 25, 1888. To this union three sons were born, namely: John of Roach, Missouri; Guy of French Lick, Indiana and Zenor of Chicago, Illinois. All of which survive. He also leaves the widow, nine grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mary Tillery of Newton Stewart and one brother, Fountain McMickle of Indianapolis, Indiana. Although Mr. McMickle was not a member of any church he was a strong believer in a supreme power. He was a hard working, honest citizen and of a pleasant light hearted disposition. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and associates.

SHEEHY Sarah Louise Sheehy, born in Springfield Missouri, June 8, 1916, passed August 11, 2008 at the Lodge Nursery in Loveland Ohio. Louise as she was known to family was the 4th child of a family of 8 children. After graduating high school Louise earned a cosmetology degree in French Lick Indiana and moved to Louisville Kentucky where she married her first husband Allen Manger and opened a very successful beauty business. After ten short years of marriage Al Manger died from Lou Gehrig disease. Louise, known as Sara in the last fifteen years was again preceded in death by her beloved second husband of fifty-three years Edmund Grey Sheehy and six of her siblings, sisters: Lydia Puckett, Mayadalen Hale, Reynolds Davis and two brothers John Isham McMickle and Guy Charles McMickle. She is survived by two sisters Elizabeth Jeffery of Boise Idaho and Marjorie McMickle of Spring Hill Florida and sister-in-law Joetta McMickle in Cincinnati, Ohio. Eight nieces and nephews Wilber Lee Puckett, Fred Davis, Anna Marie McGeaghe, Melva Jandron, Guy McMickle, Brenda Pettengill, Alan Jeffery, Sue Thompson and many great and great, great nieces and nephews. Survived by sisters Reba Wittenborn, Ruby Bowling, and Melva Murray; brother Fredrick (Bucky) O'Neil; and sister-in-law Marjorie McMickle. Loving mother of Guy Charles II and Melva Jandron. Proud grandmother to Guy Charles III., Sean, Lara Bailly, Lisa, Albert, Patrick, and Tara Hargrave. Great grandmother of cherished Shannon, Kelli, Allison, Megan, Nicholas Bailly and Robert (Robbie) Hargrave. Joetta, a lifelong nonsmoker, passed away from lung cancer at her Westwood home December 19, at age 86. Visitation will be Saturday December 27 at Gwen Mooney from 9:00 - 11:00 AM. Private funeral service at 11:00 AM. Joetta worked in the gourmet restaurant industry for over 20 years until early 1970's. She then dedicated herself to caring for her grandchildren; pursuing her study and lifelong passion for gardening (especially begonias) and gourmet cooking. Joetta lived her life with compassion for others, gentleness, self sacrifice, quiet courage, and personal responsibility. Joetta’s life and undying belief in those she loved are gifts of compassion and strength she leaves us all. Her presence is and will forever be missed. David “Dave” Woodrow Pettengill

David “Dave” Woodrow Pettengill, 72, of Laguna Woods, Calif., passed away Jan. 28, 2014, at Sutter Roseville Medical Center in Roseville, Calif., due to complications from recent spinal surgery and the flu. He was born in Roseburg April 16, 1941, to Shirley and Sylvia Pettengill. David lived and worked most of his life in Coquille.

Dave was a passionate man who enjoyed his 30 years as a Coquille police officer, retiring as sergeant in 1999. In addition, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1961 and sheared sheep in Coos and Douglas counties for many years alongside his father and best friend Shirley Pettengill. He loved golf, fishing with friend Skip Frazier and his time as a 4-H leader. Dave always made time for youth who needed gentle guidance.

David was a devoted husband of 50 years to Brenda Jeffery Pettengill who preceded him in death from cancer Dec. 8, 2011. He was an extremely loving and proud of his three daughters, Beth (Cory) Butler of Fair Oaks Calif., Kay (Brent) Conley of Carnation, Wash., and April Pettengill of Lakeland, Flordia. In addition to his daughters, he is also survived by his sister, Rhoda Berglund of Seattle, Wash.; grandchildren, Ryan Stateler, Brandon (Kristen) Stateler, Elizabeth (Steven) Crnkovich, Ethan, Ellie and Sam Butler, Kyle Conley, Michael Conley, John Brewer and Alexis Brewer and great-grandsons, Colton Crnkovich and Jesse Smith.

Dave and Brenda enjoyed time traveling in Europe, going on cruises and taking their motor home across country visiting their daughters, grandchildren, closest friend of 50 years Magdalena “Lee” (Skip) Luddington, Aunt Marjorie McMickle, sister-in-law, Sue Thompson, brothers-in-law, Alan Jeffery and Roy Berglund, along with many nieces, nephews and family members.

The family would like to thank the people of Coquille whom Dave loved and missed to the end. A special thank you to California friend Sheri Warner who befriended, loved and helped care for Dad, Mom and their four legged child Ginger over the past 5 years.

A private family memorial will take place where David’s ashes will be spread at sea per his request.

IRVINE, Calif. — A celebration of life for Vernon Faris George, 67, who died Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Hoag Hospital in Irvine, Calif., was Monday, April 4, 2011 in Irvine.

Mr. George was born June 16, 1943, in Norton, Va., the son of Vernon and Mildred Robbins George.

Mr. George was a 1961 graduate of Washington High School. He attended the University of Mississippi where he served in the U.S. Air Force ROTC and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He served in the Air Force as an aeronautical engineer during the Vietnam War.

Following his discharge from the Air Force, Mr. George had a career in sales and for most of his life a career in real estate development. He was retired for the last 10 years. He was a Master Mason in the Masonic Order. He enjoyed sports, travel and collecting wine.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Beth Pettengill George; three sons, Faris George, Ryan Stateler and wife, Xantha, and Brandon Stateler; one daughter, Elizabeth George; two brothers, Joe George and wife, Becky, and Laforest George and wife, Jane; one sister, Melody George Logan and husband, Robert; and 10 nieces and nephews.
